Kerala is physically the smallest but one of the most active maritime states of India. Since ancient times, fish has constituted one of the major parts of the diet of Keralites. It is estimated that about 70 per cent of the total fish production in the State is being consumed internally. The annual per capita consumption of fish in the State is about 20.02 kg which is higher than the national average consumption. When compared to that of the other states in the country, the per capita consumption of fish in Kerala is 6 times higher than the all India average. Scarcity of fresh fishes (Formalin and ammonia free) in the market is one of the major crisis faced in the recent times. Being a highly remunerative sector, Kudumbashree in convergence with the fisheries department is taking up this venture to provide diversified livelihood opportunities to the farmers. Ponds available under LSGD, private firms and interested farmers will be identified in the first phase.
