Kalamassery
Kalamassery is a town and a municipality in Ernakulam district in the Kerala state of India, spread over an area of 27 km2. It is a highly industrialised region with several factories and IT companies. Kalamassery is the Industrial Hub of Kerala. The Neighbouring localities of Kalamassery are Thrikkakara, Eloor, Edappally, Choornikkara, Edathala and Aluva. The town is being modernised with the help of a program sponsored by the World Bank, financing through the Government of Kerala.
The name Kalamassery is believed to be originated from the name Kalabassery. "Kalabam" means Elephant and Kalamassery is the place where Elephants for the Trikkakkara temple had been kept for Onam celebrations. It was once part of the territory of the princely state, Cochin.
The face of Kalamassery changed a lot in the last decade owing to the Developments after the changeover of the status from Panchayat to Municipality.
The town presents a wide range of activities in various Institutional, Commercial, Hospitality and Tourism sectors. Growth in such activities, possibilities of absorption in various service sectors, scope of employment in trade and business activities and retailing etc. have attracted rural poor to the town.
There are 42 wards in Kalamassery Municipality and has a population of 71,038. Density of population is 2337 per sqkm. Kalamassery has an average literacy rate of 91.12%. There are 3955 BPL families In Kalamassery. SC Population in the Municipality is 5630. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Owing to rapid urbanization in and around the town of Kalamassery , large influx of the migrants has been observed.
Since the transformation of the Panchayat into a Town, Kalamassery has tried to resolve the growing demand of the population with respect to housing, employment and shelter through various State /Centrally Sponsored programmes, but still the demand for housing is mounting every year.
Survey have been undertaken in various schemes of Municipality to find the landless and houseless population like EMS housing scheme survey. Survey under BSUP, PMAY Survey, LIFE Survey, Sparsham Campaign etc.
In the past, efforts have been made to address the need of housing through various programme like BSUP, EMS housing, Janakeeyasoothranam, Vambay etc. But still there is demand for housing in the municipal area and is being addressed through PMAY-LIFE.
