Etymology
There are different thoughts about the origin of the term Mattannur. The name is derived from the Word Mottannur which means the place (Ooru) of barren hills (Mottakkunnu). As per the survey records it is assumed that the name Mattannur is the corrupted form of Pattinikkadu. Pattini is another name of Sagesess Kannaki, mentioned in the Chilappathikaram. Legends say that Plini, the famous Egyptian traveler had visited Mattannur in millenniums back. Another theory is that the famous Malabar King Hannan or Nannan had ruled the area with capital as Mattannur and the place got the name as land of MahanaNannan. It is also believed that another Egyptian traveler Ptolomy reached Mattannur in the year 150AD and named the region as Mastannur which means a high land or elevated land. The name mentioned as Masthanagari in the ancient historical records is also believed to be the present Mattannur.
