GENERAL BACKGROUND OF THE ULB IN DETAIL
Mananthavady is a municipality and taluk in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. It is the largest town in Wayanad. The town is located on the banks of Mananthavady Puzha, a tributary of the Kabani River. Mananthavady has been referred to as "Hosenkadi" in a dictum scribbled under a copper artifact found at the Ananthanathaswamy Temple at Varadoor. The dominant view on the etymology is that the word is derived from "Mane Eytha Vady (The place where an arrow was shot at the deer)". This view is strengthened by the existence of a place called Ambukuthy, literally the location where the arrow pierced, on the outskirts of the town.[1] This area was once ruled by the Pazhassi dynasty and the tomb of Pazhassi Raja is an important heritage site located in the heart of the town. Mananthavady was a major army camp for the British during their campaign against Pazhassi. One can still see the vestiges of the colonial period - canteen, club, barracks, rest house, cemetery - around Mananthavady. The District Hospital in Mananthavady is the only major treatment facility for the service of the tribal communities and other less privileged sections of Wayanad.

The People and Population:
One important characteristic feature of the district is the large adivasi population, consisting mainly of Paniyas, Kurumas, Adiyars, Kurichyas, Ooralis, Kadars, and Kattunaikkans. They are the different aboriginal tribes of Mananthavady. The tribal population in Mananthavady. constitutes 18.5 per cent of the District population and 36 per cent of the State‟s tribal population. Major communities found in the District are Paniyan (44.06%), Mullu Kuruman (17.34 %), Kurichian (16.10 %), Kattunaickan (11.33%), Adiyan (7.41%) and Urali Kuruman (3.13 per cent). Mananthavady has a large settler population. People from almost all parts of Kerala have migrated to this fertile land for building up their lives. Mananthavady has a small Jain community consisting of Gowders who came from Karnataka. They have built beautiful temples all over the district.Almost all sections of Christianity are well represented. One fourth population of Mananthavady is constituted by Christians. Muslims constitute another one fourth population and rest of the population belongs to Hindus. Their hard work and sacrifice helped them to prosper. On the other hand, the last few decades have seen the complete marginalization of the indigenous people.

HOUSING PROFILE OF THE ULB
Mananthavady is a Municipality in Kerala with an area of 80.1 km2. When the Municipality of Mananthavady came into being in 2015.
Housing in Mananthavady is nowadays becoming a very big issue on account of the increased population. In the past housing was not an issue as joint family system is the prevalent culture. However, at the present time the elder members living in the joint family are compelled to opt for separate houses as the limited infrastructure is a hindrance to all the family members. This is the most important reason behind the increased housing problem in Mananthavady . Again the population growth as well as the non- availability of suitable land is another issue as 17% of land is classified as„ Nilam in municipality. Both these factors combined have a major impact on the housing picture of the Municipality.
