Thrikkakara Municipality is situated at Kakkanad ,administrative capital of Ernakulam district is a city in the State of Kerala covering an area of 28.01 square kilometers. Thrikkakkara is a suburb of the city of Kochi and is located in central Kerala with a population of 77319 according to the 2011 census . Thrikkakkara Municipality formed on 2010 November 30. Thrikkakara Municipality situates in the Kanayyannur taluk of Ernakulam Thrikkakkara Muncipality belongs to Edapally block. Its boarders are Edatala Panchayath and Kalamaserry Municipality at the north, Thiruvankulam, Vadavucode- Puthencruz panchayath and Thripunithura Municipality at the south, Vadavucode Puthencruz, Kunnathunad and Kizhakkambalam Panchayaths at the east and Cochin Corporation at the west.
It is especially notable for its significance in the festival of Onam, and in the tale associated with it linked to the famous Thrikkakara temple. The name Thrikkakkara is an evolved pronunciation of the word “Thiru Kaal Kara”, meaning the place of the holy foot. This connects to the tale behind the festival of Onam, by which, this is the place on which Lord Vamana set his foot to push down Mahabali to the 'lower world' Pathalam. There is a place named Pathalam about 20 km from this place in the same district.
