History

Paravur (Paravūr), is a town and a municipality in the Kollam district of the Indian state of Kerala. Paravur is surrounded by Arabian sea and Ethikara Lake. Paravur is located at 8.78 N 76 E. It has an average elevation of 10 metres . Paravur, 21 kilometers from the Kollam, is a narrow skirt of land stretching in between the backwaters and the sea. There is an elevation of 6 metres above sea level, extending to 16 metres on the inland. On 10 April 2016 at approximately 03:30 AM IST,  the Puttingal Temple in ParavurKollamIndia, experienced an explosion and fire after firework celebrations went awry. As a result, 111 people were killed and more than 350 were injured, including some with severe burns. The temple and at least 150 houses in the area of the temple were damaged by the blast. According to local reports and eyewitnesses, the explosion and fire were caused by sparks from a firecracker being used in a competitive fireworks display igniting fireworks in a concrete storehouse

Population

As of 2011 India census,[6] Paravur has a population of 43,739 (38,652 is the urban population and 5,087 is the village population). Males constitute 47% of the population and females 53%. Paravur has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 77%. In Paravur, 10% of the population are under 6 years of age. Total number of households are 9,155.
