History

Punalur is a municipal town & business center, situated near the kerala tamilnadu border in the Kollam district of the southern indian state of kerala. It is situated on the banks of the kallada river. It is about 45 km (28 mi) north east of kollam and 75 kms (47 mi) north of trivandrum.

It is one of the largest towns in kollam district, home to the papoer industry with the punalur paper paper mills established in 1850's, one of the first industry in kerala and a pioneer of the industrial revolution of the state. Punalur become an important trading and transport center between kollam & Sengottai (TN) under the rule of the Tranvancore Kingdom. Steady program by the Punalur Panchayat administration saw an upgrade to municipality state in 1972.
