Vatakara municipality formed on 01st oct 1958.Vatakara was under the regime of Kolathiri. Later on Tippu Sulthan captured Vatakara. In 1790 British conquered Tippu and the land was handed over to the Kadathanad Raja. Vatakara is the birth place of Thacholi Othenan, the hero of the ballads of North Malabar. Thacholi tharavadu is in Nadakku Thazha desam near Meppayil in Vatakara. Vatakara had played significant role in the National movement of the freedom struggle for our nation. Vatakara was the headquarters of the Kurumpanad Taluk which contributed much in awakening and inculcating patriotism. The decision of Guruvayoor Sathyagraha and Payyannur Uppu sathyagraha, which invited attention nationally, wastaken in the gathering of Congress held at Vatakara. Sri. Moyyarath Sankaran was instrumental in publishing ‘Kerala Kesari’ daily. Vatakara was venue for various labour movements. Vagbhadanatha’s Athmavidya Sangham and Sree Narayanaguru’s Dharmaparipalana Sangham energized the social reforms movement in Vatakara. The ‘Siddhasrama’ which is established by Swami Sivananda Paramahamsan with a view of eradicating caste system and social untouchability is also functioning in Municipality.
