The Kochi Municipal Corporation was formed on 1st November 1967 merging municipalities of Fortkochi, Mattancherry and Ernakulam. The city is divided into 74 administrative wards. The corporation has its central office situated in Ernakulam and has zonal offices at Fortkochi, Mattancherry, Palluruthy, Edapally and Vytila.
For the purpose of administration, the corporation is divided into different departments each catering to different aspect of development and welfare. The various departments include General Administration, Town Planning, Health, Engineering, Revenue, Accounts, and the Council section. It also has Janasevanakendram (centre for people’s service), that addresses the issues of the public. A total of eight maternity and child welfare centers function in the city under the corporation.
As per census India, population of Kochi in 2011 is 601,574; of which male and females are 296,668 and 304,906 respectively
