Kudumbashree

Launched by the Government of Kerala in 1998 for wiping out absolute poverty from the State through concerted community action under the leadership of Local Self Governments, Kudumbashree is today one of the largest women-empowering projects in the country. The programme has 39.97 lakh members and covers more than 50% of the households in Kerala. Built around three critical components, micro credit, entrepreneurship and empowerment, the Kudumbashree initiative has today succeeded in addressing the basic needs of the less privileged women, thus providing them a more dignified life and a better future. Literal meaning of Kudumbashree is prosperity (shree) of family (Kudumbam).

We Touch Lives!

Asraya

Despair was no stranger to Madhavi Amma, a poor widow in a remote village in Wayanad, whose spinal injury in an accident pushed her to the brink of destitution- until help came in the form of Kudumbashree, who took her plight to the Grama Sabha and made her part of the Mullankolli Panchayat’s Ashraya Project for destitute rehabilitation.

Through Kudumbashree’s involvement, Madhavi Amma now has a new home, continuing medical support and small plot of rubber to cultivate. Today, visitors to her home will find on the wall- alongside pictures of gods and goddesses- a photograph of Thankamani, the chairperson of the CDS of Mullankolli who helped her find hope for a future with dignity.
Buds

Till recently little Sichithra woke up every morning only to lie in the bed for the rest of the day. Today like every other child, she is doing what she has always wanted to do – going to school. Ailing from multiple disabilities caused by cerebral palsy and partial blindness, it was BUDS (a special school for differently abled children) run by Kudumbashree that gave her a new life.

This is the first time in India that a Panchayath and grassroots group of women have come together to create an initiative to meet the needs of children with disabilities.
