Neighbourhood meetings @ Night - Kudumbashree members celebrate International Women's Day in a unique way Updated On 2020-03-10

As a novel way of celebrating International Women's Day, Kudumbashree members organised NHG meetings at night on 7 March 2020. This ‘night meetings’ brought an opportunity for women to own those public places and spaces which they are denied at night. By owning the public spaces at nights, Kudumbashree members made a new proclamation that all these opportunities are their rights.

There are 3 lakh NHGs in Kerala with 43 lakh women as members. Usually they conduct their NHG meetings on Saturdays or Sundays of every week at the residence of one of the NHG member. As part of the Women's Day Celebrations, it was suggested to conduct NHG meetings on 7 March 2020 any time after 7 PM. And those who could not conduct on that day, meetings were held on 8 March 2020. Most of the NHGs had organised such NHG meetings on 7 March 2020 and converted the Women's Day Celebration as an entirely different experience.

The theme of our NHGs ‘night meeting’ was ‘My Opportunity My Right'. A circular was also given to all NHG s with three points to discuss and think during NHG meetings at night. The three concepts given in the circular were as follows.

“1. Let us think and work for securing new opportunities realizing that the opportunities of women are their rights.

2. In addition to all the activities we did until now, let us decide today to become the harbingers of change.

3. Through the fraternity of women and through new opportunities, let us work hard for equality and development. "

These points were read out and were discussed in the NHG meetings with great enthusiasm and strength. Prior to the night NHG meetings, Kudumbashree members had set up 'My Opportunity is my Right'-Kudumbashree Flags proclaiming women rights all across the state.

'My Opportunity is my Right' - This was the slogan for the Women's Day Celebrations of Kudumbashree, this year. As part of the Women's Day Celebrations, the NHGs were directed to make ‘Flags' highlighting slogans about women’s rights and fix it in the public places without causing an inconvenience to the public. The aim was to pass on the message- 'My opportunity My Right' to the society. The NHGs were asked to get an old white cloth, write slogans of Women's Day, make flags and fix it in different places of their locality. NHGs had wholeheartedly welcomed that idea and they made maximum efforts to make aware the need of becoming empowered by identifying more opportunities.

Respective District Missions had organised various programmes in their districts and the International Women's Day was celebrated in its real sense paving way for fruitful discussions.

Kudumbashree's Customer Service Points joining hands with State Bank of India Updated On 2020-02-19

Kudumbashree always try to explore new areas of opportunities for providing employment to its members and has started launching Customer Service Points joining hands with State Bank of India. Customer Service Points in association with SBI commenced operations in 4 different locations until now. The first Customer Service Point was launched at Thrissur district of Kerala on 26 August 2019. Later, one entrepreneur each from Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur districts also made use of this opportunity. Smt. Latha Bharathan, Irinjalakuda of Thrissur district, Smt. Dalia Shilikumar, Moozhikkulam of Ernakulam district, Smt. Jeetha, Puthukurichi, Kadinamkulam of Thiruvananthapuram district and Smt. Haritha, Thaliparamba of Kannur district are the entrepreneurs who had launched their Customer Service Points until now.

Customer Service Point is one such novel area of livelihood opportunity. Kudumbashree came to know that many banks have plans to start Customer Service Points near their busy branches, to provide services when generally there’s heavy rush. In addition to that, it was noted that the banks have plans to open Customer Service Points near areas where they do not have any branch. These service points would help the customers to do financial transactions up to a limit. Kudumbashree made discussions about the same with State Bank of India (SBI) initially and then partnered with them to start our Customer Service Points (CSP).Customer Service Points (CSP) provides self employment opportunity to one individual. Services provided at CSPs are Receipt cash deposit upto Rs.20,000, cash withdrawal upto Rs.20,000, transferring money from one bank to the another, opening of new accounts and linking mobile number with Aadhaar. The entrepreneurs usually have to invest up to Rs.1 lakh for procuring laptop, printer, scanner, kiosk etc.

Once operational, service providers will have to keep registers like transaction register, loan application register, account register, complaint register and visitors register. First step in starting of a CSP is to identify the location and entrepreneur for operating. After that, the entrepreneurs would be allowed to work as the accredited customer service agent. Kudumbashree had followed those steps in the association with SBI. Through this novel initiative, Kudumbashree members would get a new job opportunity. In addition to that, this initiative will help people get banking services even after the banking hours. Also public will get an access to the banking services near their locality. In addition to that, more people could be brought to the banking system through mobilizing more accounts. This in turn will help develop savings habit among the common people and our CSP agent can provide financial literacy. Kudumbashree entrepreneurs would get livelihood opportunities through these ‘mini banks’ aka Customer Service Points.
