Samatha Green - Bio Waste Management System
Date 4July 2017
New Initiatives

The bio-waste management system of Kunnamkulam Municipality is one of the shining examples of the success stories of decentralised planning campaign started in Kerala.

For the last one year Kunnamkulam Municipality has been implementing a new system of Bio-waste management which is economical as well as eco-friendly. It successfully integrates different agencies like IRTC(Integrated Rural Technology Centre), Kudumbasree Self Help Groups, and the concerned waste producers. The Municipality insists that the wastes are segregated at source by the producers of the wastes themselves. Bio wastes from the residential sector are being treated at sources using bio-bins supplied by the Municipality with the enoculam mixed coir-pith which has been distributed among people at a 90% subsidised rate. The segregated bio-wastes from the city is collected and transported to the centralised bio-waste plant of the Municipality situated in a place called ‘Kurukkanpara’.

These bio wastes weighing around 3 tonnes per day is treated and converted into bio manure. This involves a bio-chemical process of windrow composting system using the same enoculam injected coir-pith medium. The plant is semi-mechanised and some sort of manual labour is also needed. Mechanisation and the required infrastructure of the plant are funded by the decentralised plan of the lsg and the labour is supplied by a Kudumbasree micro enterpreneur group. For this purpose a six member women group named ‘Samatha’ was formed last year with selected members from the families around the plant. They produce bio manure from the city bio wastes and sell these manure to the local farmers in and around. The technical support is given by IRTC, a non-profit organisation registered in Kerala empanelled for implementing waste management systems across the state.
